New Findings on Human Longevity Predictors

چکیده
Centenarians (persons living to age 100 and over) represent a population, which could be useful in identifying factors leading to long life and avoidance of fatal diseases. This study explores whether people living to 100 and beyond were any different from their peers at their middle age (30 years) in terms of their physical characteristics (height and body build), occupation and marital status. A random representative sample of 240 men born in 1887 and survived to age 100 was selected from the US Social Security Administration database. These records of men with exceptional longevity were then linked to the US WWI draft registration cards collected in 1917 when these men were 30 years old. This allowed us to validate 171 cases of exceptional longevity, and obtain information on vital characteristics of male centenarians when they were young adults. Randomly selected shorter-lived men matched with centenarian men by birth year, race and county of draft registration were used as controls. This approach allowed us to eliminate confounding effects of birth cohort, race and place of draft registration on survival. It was found that the ‘stout’ body build (being in the heaviest 15% of population) was negatively associated with survival to age 100 years. Both farming and having large number of children (4+) at age 30 significantly increased the chances of exceptional longevity by 100-200%. The effects of immigration status, marital status, and body height on longevity were less important,

Search for mechanisms of exceptional human longevity.
This study presents initial findings of a new ongoing research project aimed to identify important predictors and mechanisms of exceptional human longevity. For this purpose the detailed data on long-lived people surviving to 100 years in the Unites States are collected, validated, and analyzed. The study found that being born to a young mother is an important predictor of person's longevity. T...
متن کاملPredictors of Exceptional Longevity: Effects of Early-Life Childhood Conditions, Midlife Environment and Parental Characteristics.
Knowledge of strong predictors of mortality and longevity is very important for actuarial science and practice. Earlier studies found that parental characteristics as well as early-life conditions and midlife environment play a significant role in survival to advanced ages. However, little is known about the simultaneous effects of these three factors on longevity. This ongoing study attempts t...

Studies of centenarians are useful in identifying factors leading to long life and avoidance of fatal diseases. In this article we consider several approaches to study effects of early-life and midlife conditions on survival to advanced ages: use of non-biological relatives as controls, the within-family analysis, as well as a sampling of controls from the same population universe as centenaria...

This paper explores new opportunities provided by the ongoing revolution in information technology, computer science, and Internet expansion for studies of exceptional human longevity. To this aim, the detailed family data for 991 alleged centenarians born between 1875 and 1899 in the United States were extracted from publicly available computerized family histories of 75 million individuals av...
